Matthew 6:20 says, “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:” I remember a Donald Duck cartoon where someone asked Donald’s Uncle Scrooge if he had any hobbies. He said, “Yes, I collect coins.” The next cartoon caption showed […]

Acts 4:33 says, “…and great grace was upon them all.” Today grace is an overused word. Churches often use grace as part of their name. Finding myself a little confused about the word, I went to the dictionary. Webster gives 12 different meanings. The first definition is “Favor, kindness, mercy.” We might ask ourselves: “What

1 Corinthians 12:31 says, “But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.” The “way” that Paul is talking about is charity. Some translations use the word “love” instead of charity. This is actually more confusing. Love has a number of different meanings; charity is more specific. It

Genesis 1:26 states, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:…” This simple verse says volumes about God and man. God made a creature in His creation that looked like Himself. He did not create another God. Adam was not God, but he looked like God. He must have looked

Exodus 4:2-3 states, “And the Lord said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent: and Moses fled from before it.” While driving the cuber down a windrow of hay,

Jeremiah 36:25 says, “Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the roll: but he would not hear them.” When we refuse the truth and go our own way, presuming that we know what is best, regardless of what God says, we commit presumptuous sin.  My

Jeremiah 19:10 says, “Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee…” I never thought there was much use for old bottles until I learned that a friend of mine actually hunted for them. It was an interesting hobby. He would find an old, deserted farmhouse and get

Romans 8:1 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” I have heard it said a time or two by well-meaning Christians that they finally found true freedom in the Christian life by not feeling guilty all the time.

Jeremiah 6:16 says, “Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.” The Model T Ford did much to change our lifestyle in

Isaiah 58:1 says, “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.” Being in the church all my life, I have only seen a “grand sweep” of the Holy Spirit a few times. Mine is a holiness denomination. Revival services
