It would sometimes have some pastries which had to be eaten right away. If there was not a full box, the clerk would go to the shelf and get a fresh loaf and break it in two, to fill the box. We got the box mainly for dog food. The dog loved broken bread with gravy over it. That is how I learned to make gravy.

When Jesus said He was the bread of life, He said a mouthful. Earlier in this chapter we see that Jesus had fed 5,000 with 5 barley loaves and two small fish. After they were full, He said to His disciples, “…Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost” (V. 12). I wonder what happened to the 12 baskets that were left. Did they become day-old bread? Who ate them? Maybe they were used for an object lesson for the things He was going to say.

The Jews did not like Jesus saying that He was the bread that came down from Heaven. “Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:49-51).

In the following verses Jesus challenged them to move from manna that perished to Himself, the everlasting bread, the bread of life. Some Jews already had chosen not to believe Him. They influenced many of His disciples, who turned from following Him (V. 66).

We may think that the Jews and disciples who turned away held onto an old plan and could not accept a new plan. God’s plan never changed, it simply was fulfilled, or completed in Jesus. In Deuteronomy 32:4, “He is the Rock, his work is perfect:…,” Jesus is called the Rock. We see Jeshurun forsaking the God that made him, “…and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.” Paul said, “…That Rock was Christ” (I Corinthians 10:4). In Psalm 81:16 we see God’s heart, “…with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.”

Today there are so many things that promise to satisfy our hunger. When we actually obtain these things they leave us hungering yet. The 5,000 continued to follow Jesus to Capernaum. “Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed” (John 6:26&27). Maybe at that time Jesus had the disciples hand over to them the 12 baskets of day-old bread (my guess). When the crowd asked Him what they should do, He called them to believe on Him.

This is how we become “in Christ” and He “in us” (John 6:56), by eating
