Numbers 16:2 says, \u201cAnd they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown:\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many have sought to be famous through Hollywood, sports, politics, etc. Some music entertainers have attracted large followings. How disappointing to see some of these turn to drugs, alcohol and even suicide. There is often a lot of unhappiness and sorrow for the fame seeker. This can also be true in the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two hundred fifty men in our text were princes of the assembly. These men were chosen by God to do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord (Numbers 16:9). Moses said in verse 10, \u201cAnd he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?\u201d They were near to God, yet not content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They were famous in the congregation, and yet still not content. They were jealous of Moses and Aaron, like Satan before he fell, wanting to be God himself. These men accused Moses and Aaron of thinking that they were the only holy ones. They made the statement in verse 3, \u201c\u2026Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?\u201d Everyone in the congregation was not holy. We see a little later that God destroyed 14,700 of them with a plague, besides the 250 princes (V. 49).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not only were these 250 men princes, and famous, they were men of renown. Genesis 6:4, \u201cThere were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.\u201d The 250 famous princes of the assembly, religious leaders, called of God, nigh to God, may have been mighty in stature. At least they were looked up to with renown.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a boy I got to meet Earl Mosteller when he came to our home. He was a missionary and a very godly man, and extremely tall. I was impressed and commented on his height. He told me something I will never forget; \u201cA man is always the tallest when he is on his knees.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oh how we need to be on our knees.\u00a0 It is there that we forget about who is the greatest\u2014who is the leader. We should be glad if God uses us at all. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Korah was the leading spokesman for these famous fools who turned against Moses. Certainly Moses and Aaron didn\u2019t do everything perfect. Life out there in the desert wasn\u2019t easy. Korah\u2019s job was to be a minister of the tabernacle. Years later Psalm 84 was written for the sons of Korah. The whole Psalm is powerful. I like verses 1 and 10, \u201cHow amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts!\u201d and \u201cFor a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.\u201d It was in their wicked tent doors where destruction came for the FAMOUS FOOLS! \u00a0
