Psalm 84:10 says, \u201cFor a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents off wickedness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Charles Spurgeon stated, \u201cGod\u2019s worst is better than the devils best.\u201d The pleasure of sin is only for a season (Hebrews 11:25). It would appear that the doorkeeper is the lowest position in God\u2019s house. Maybe today we would compare it to the church janitor, a very humble position. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The pastor of a large church left his study and made his way down the hall to the prayer chapel, knelt down at the little altar and prayer, \u201cLord, I am nothing, Lord I am nothing.\u201d The youth minister saw him go in, went in an joined him, praying, \u201cLord, I am nothing, Lord I am nothing.\u201d The janitor soon joined them, knelt down and prayed, \u201cLord I am nothing, Lord I am nothing,\u201d The youth minister turned to the senior pastor and said, \u201cNow look who thinks they\u2019re nothing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In I Chronicles 15:23&24 we see that Berechiah, Elkanah, Obed-edom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark. At least they received honorable mention. I want us to think for a moment of a king who chose to become a doorkeeper. John 10:7-9 says, \u201cThen said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How did Jesus do as the doorkeeper? It is only through him that we can be saved from sin and hell. He is the only way to the Father (John 14:6). Many thieves and robbers have tried to steal, kill, or destroy the sheep. Jesus is the doorkeeper who bids everyone to come in; \u201c\u2026by me if any man enter in\u2026\u201d (John 10:9). He calls out to sinners, changes them, saves them. He feeds them with green pastures. He shepherds them. He knows His sheep and they know Him. He talks to them, knows them. They know Him, recognize His voice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cost King Jesus paid for the privilege of being the doorkeeper was His very life. Jesus said, \u201c\u2026I lay down my life for the sheep\u201d (John 10:15). He is the doorkeeper who has power over life and death; \u201c\u2026I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father\u201d (John 10:17-18). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now let\u2019s look at ourselves for a moment. You and I are doorkeepers; \u201cBehold I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me\u201d (Revelation 3:20).
