“BUT THE COMFORTER, WHICH IS THE HOLY GHOST, WHOM THE FATHER WILL SEND IN MY NAME, HE SHALL TEACH YOU ALL THINGS, AND BRING ALL THINGS TO YOUR REMEMBRANCE, WHATSOEVER I HAVE SAID UNTO YOU.” JOHN 14:26
A fellow student in my high school Spanish class, Greg, had a photographic memory. Before a vocabulary test he would simply open the book and look at the page with the vocabulary words for about ten seconds, close the book, take the test, and not miss a word. I don’t know how long he could see that page or how many pages he could store up.
God made us all with a memory. There are some things we will remember all our lives. I can still remember the smell of a Ford wheel tractor I sat on when I was about two or three years old. Maybe you have some early memories as well.
When it comes to the written Word of God, it seems impossible that so many things could have been written exactly as God intended. Over many years, and by many different men, the Holy Ghost inspired the writing of the Holy Scriptures. There is no other way to explain it.
Jesus Himself told the disciples that the Holy Ghost would bring His words to their remembrance. They did not always hear the same things. Some remembered one thing and some another.
Some believe the Bible has errors. Others believe the Old Testament became void with the writing of the New Testament. Some have changed the words to suit themselves, adding words and taking away words. What a sad day it will be when Revelation 22:19 is fulfilled. “And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”
The Holy Ghost was not only to cause them to remember the words of Jesus, perhaps so they could write them down and we could have them, but He was also to teach them all things.
After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to Cleopas and his friend on the road to Emmaus. Luke 24:16 says, “But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.” In verse 31 their eyes were opened and they knew Him. Then they said (V. 32), “… Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” Later in Jerusalem with the eleven, “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” (V. 45).
While Jesus was here He continued to make the Scriptures clear. The Sermon on the Mount is a good example. Not only was the Holy Ghost faithful in the inspiration of the Scripture, but is here to open our understanding of it, and teach us all things that we need to know. What a powerful thing to have our eyes and understanding opened, our memory enhanced, and all by the true Author of the INSPIRED WORD!
