I Corinthians 2:10 states, “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”
During my teenage years, our family lived on a hillside on Bigelow Gulch Road, Spokane, Washington. Full of ambition, I decided to hand-dig a well behind the house. I dug a hole about 4 feet in diameter and 4 feet deep, but I had to quit because I ran into rock. Years later our house was removed and the hillside finally blasted away for the new highway, revealing over 100 feet of solid rock below my “well” attempt. I wonder what the Holy Spirit thought when I decided to dig that well? He knew the rock was there.
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were all part of the creation of the earth. God knows where all the gold is under the earth. He knows where diamonds and precious stones are waiting. Our text says, “…for the Spirit searcheth all things….” Man searches high and low, far and wide, and still much of this earth and the universe is a mystery. I Corinthians 2:7&8 says, “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory. Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” We see here that “the deep things of God ” go far beyond the physical realm.
God wants to share His deep things with us. Therefore, “God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit.” He wants to give us His deep and precious things—things higher than the Heavens, broader and deeper than the earth and seas. I Corinthians 2:9 states, “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” Those who love Him have repented of their sins, found the forgiveness Christ purchased at the Cross, have received the gift of the Holy Spirit, and all the deep things of God that come by walking after the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:1).
Why is it that we miss so many of the “deep things of God?” As a boy I received a new pair of slip-on shoes that were too big for me. I wanted to wear them, but had to wait a couple of years for my feet to grow. Some things the Holy Spirit wants to show us, but has to wait until we grow closer to Him. He has a greater desire to share than we have to receive. Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” Earlier in Jeremiah we see how God’s people had grossly rejected Him. He had to punish them and drive them from the land He had given them. God was still looking ahead to a time He would make a covenant with them again and bring them back into their land. He could hardly wait, “Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul,” (Jeremiah 32:41).
So often we try to dig deeper, only to run into solid rock, when what we really need is to walk closer and let the Holy Spirit show us the DEEP THINGS OF GOD!
