Beyond Measure

John 3:34 states, “For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.”

To the best of my memory, the irrigation pump on the farm ran at about 110 to 120 psi to operate the equivalent of eight wheel lines. Later when I moved to Naches, Washington, I watched some men drill an irrigation well about a mile or two down the canyon from the Wenas reservoir. When they hit water a geyser shot up out of the hole 75 feet in the air. They weren’t able to cap the hole, and had to call in a team of oil-well drillers from Texas to do the job. A pump wasn’t needed. The pressure at the well head was 240 psi caused by the reservoir.

In our text, John the Baptist is speaking about Jesus being sent by the Father to speak the words of God. He says that the Father didn’t measure out a portion of the Holy Spirit on Jesus.  The next verse (35), says, “The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.” Now that is a lot of power. Even the woman who touched the hem of His garment was healed (Luke 8:43-44).

Jesus in His human body was baptized by John, and the Spirit of God fell upon Him like a dove (Matthew 3:16). All that power enabled Him to heal, cast out demons, do many miracles, fulfill the scriptures, know what was in the heart of man, raise the dead, and even rise from the tomb Himself. There wasn’t anything He couldn’t do. The greatest thing of all was a powerful love that could not be put out, and led Him to the cross where He laid down His life to save sinners—horrible, filthy, wicked sinners, like you and me.

We must realize that Jesus’ life didn’t begin at Bethlehem. It was just when He became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:1-14). He was in the beginning and all things were made by Him.  From the creation to the incarnation He was very active. I Corinthians 10:1-4 says, “Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that rock was Christ.”

We must also realize that His work did not end when He rose to be with the Father. “I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever (John 14:16). Not only is He our advocate (I John 2:1), but He is coming back to finish His work on earth. He will judge the nations, rule for 1,000 years on the throne of David, and put Satan away forever. We will dwell with Him forever in a city that doesn’t need the sun or moon to light it, because Jesus the Lamb will light it (Revelation 21:23).

Before Jesus left, He said to His disciples, “Peace be unto you: as my father hath sent me, even so send I you” (John 20:21). He sent them to Jerusalem to be endued with power from on high, POWER BEYOND MEASURE!
