Sin and Covid

A hospital room

Are sin and Covid related? Yes! Wow! That is not a politically correct answer. If you are still with me, take the time to find a Bible and turn to Luke 13:1-17. A very dear Christian friend of mine came down with Covid. He and his wife were helping my wife and I pack so that we could move. All four of us got Covid. Sadly, Ed died. The three of us got over it in time. It was obvious to me that not only sinners get Covid. Sinners die from Covid and people saved from their sins die from Covid. In the end, we all die from something (Hebrews 9:27, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” The next verse goes on to say that even Christ died). The important thing to notice is that death comes first and then the judgment. The reverse order brings confusion. Let’s not ignore Genesis 2:17, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Adam and Eve did not die before the sun went down. However, the death process began in them immediately. It was a slow and certain death. They became mortal instead of immortal (Adam Clarke). It is a mistake to think that sin and dying do not go hand in hand. “Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil” (Ecclesiastes 8:11). My friend, Ed, did not die of Covid the way I understand it. His asthma and other factors were involved.

Thank you for keeping your Bible open to Luke chapter 13. In verse 1, some people were telling Jesus about some Galileans that Pilate had killed. Jesus asked them if they suffered this death because they were bad sinners. He then said no. Then He said, “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” He did not mean that Pilate was going to kill them if they didn’t repent. Nor did He mean that if they repented they would not experience physical death. He used the word “perish.” We know that God is not willing that any should perish, but that we would all come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). Physical death and perishing are not the same. In Matthew 10:28 Jesus said, “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul:” After all, when the day is done, we need the body to be killed anyway—then we can receive our glorious new body! Someone said, “Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.” It is easy to say these things. I must admit, I have a strong will to live. I also have a strong will to live forever with Jesus. I have witnessed Christians with a strong will to live who, when it came time to die, found a “dying grace.”

I want to get back to sin and sickness, sin and Covid. In Luke 13:11, Jesus encountered a woman that had a terrible infirmity. It was a spirit of infirmity. The devil had kept her bound for eighteen years. Yes, the devil can cause us to be sick. In verse 16, Jesus states that Satan had bound her. Her body was bent up to the point that she was unable to rise by herself. This is a picture of all of us. This woman had physical strength at one time. Then the devil got a hold of her. His purpose is to ruin our lives. He cannot be all places at all times as God is, but Satan has a great army of demons. These demons have the power to torment the human body. A large part of Jesus’ ministry involved casting out demons. Some may think that demons are not around today. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion walks about, seeking whom he may devour:” In verse 10, Peter speaks of God calling us to “eternal” glory, after we have suffered awhile. This is what Jesus did to this woman. She had suffered awhile (eighteen years), then Jesus called her to Himself (Luke 13:12). It broke Jesus’ heart to see people in sickness and bound by Satan. Satan delights in it.

In Matthew 9:2 Jesus said to a man sick of the palsy, “Son, be of good cheer, thy sins be forgiven thee.” Here we see sin and sickness being the same. In John 9:3 & 4, the disciples asked Jesus if the man born blind had sinned, or if his parents had sinned, causing this blindness. Jesus said neither, but that he was born to be healed.

Covid not only has the smell and threat of death, but was conceived in wickedness (not a politically correct statement). Man has done a poor job of trying to stop it. Plagues are part of the end time prophecies. We could be there. Be sure, God doesn’t like it. Adam brought sickness and sin into the world. Blame Adam for Covid. Yes, sin and Covid are related, like blood brothers. In John 16:33 Jesus said, “
in the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
